Isobutane, at normal temperature and pressure is a colorless flammable gas, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, etc. Form explosive mixture with air, explosion limit is 1.9%~8.4%(volume), the vapor is heavier than air, can spread to a considerable distance at a lower place, in case of fire source will ignite back. It is mainly found in natural gas, refinery gas and cracking gas, obtained by physical separation, and can also be prepared by isomerization of n-butane.

Application

Used for the synthesis of isoctane, as gasoline octane number improder, used for isobutene, propylene, methacrylic acid, used as refrigerant, etc.

High purity isobutane is mainly used as a standard gas and preparation of special standard mixture.

It is mainly used to produce isoctane by hydrocarbon burning with isobutyl, and used as octane number improver for gasoline. Isobutene and propylene can be prepared by cracking. Alkylated gasoline can be prepared by alkylation with n-butene and propylene. Methacrylic acid, acetone and methanol can be prepared.
